Belle Isle was the place to be, and pink was the color to wear, when approximately 14,000 walkers came together for the 2010 Detroit “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” event. This year participants raised $775,000 for the American Cancer Society.
“We know that almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way, and as long as those words can be uttered, we’re going to keep showing up at Belle Isle in October to provide hope to all people facing the disease,” said Patricia McCann, vice president of Civic Affairs for Comerica Bank.
A sponsor of the event, Comerica also was one of the leading fundraisers among companies.
“There is a great deal of pride within our company regarding this important event,” McCann said. “We definitely want to be well represented and we want to be high on the fundraising list. When all the companies, families and friends come together on Belle Isle, there is a powerful feeling of unity.
“It makes for a beautiful day every year, rain or shine.”
From the dollars raised, the American Cancer Society is able to fund cutting-edge research leading to the discovery of lifesaving treatments; advocate for all women to have access to mammograms and treatments, regardless of income; and provide free programs and services that improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families in more than 3,400 communities throughout the country.
