Theodore-Wafer-Renisha-McBrideTheodore Wafer was sentenced today to 17 years in prison for the murder of Renisha McBride, prior to the sentencing Wafer apologized to McBride’s family.
“I apologize from the bottom of my heart, I am truly sorry for your loss and I can only hope and pray that somehow you can forgive me…I only wish that I could take this horrible tragedy back and I’m asking the court, your honor, for mercy.”
Jasmine McBride, sister of Renisha McBride expressed her feelings regarding Wafer’s apology, “I don’t believe his apology was sincere, it was fake, he has no remorse.”
Wafer was accused of shooting McBride when she appeared on his front porch at about 4:30 a.m, seeking help after crashing into parked a car not far from the defendant’s house last November.
Prosecutors recommended at least 17 years in prison for Wafer, including two years for unlawful use of a gun. Defense attorney Cheryl Carpenter asked for as few as six years in prison. She says the shooting haunts Wafer.
Noting Wafer’s age, Carpenter said at the hearing Wednesday that anything more than 10 years in prison would be a “life sentence.”
Wafer claimed self-defense, stating he feared for his life when he heard loud banging on his door very early in the morning.
Wafer’s defense attorney, Cheryl Carpenter addressed the court, “I really do care about this man and feel I let him down,” said Carpenter.
