UNCF Celebrates Its 70th Anniversary With Annual 5 K UNCF Walk For Education at Belle Isle in Detroit, MI

Event Will Support Students Locally and Statewide, Providing Them With the Tools and Support They Need to Succeed In School and In Life

Detroit, Michigan (August XX, 2014) – The Michigan office of UNCF (United Negro College Fund) will celebrate the organization’s 70 years of getting students to and through school at its 26th annual UNCF Walk for Education on Saturday, August 24, 2014 in Detroit at the Belle Isle Casino. The event is a celebration of education that will bring together an estimated 2,000 community supporters to raise funds to provide students with the education they need, and the country needs them to have.
“Support for events like UNCF’s Walk for Education in Detroit is an investment in a better future that has enabled us to serve our students for 70 years,” said Michael L. Lomax, Ph.D., president and CEO, UNCF.  “By investing in our students now through events like the Walk, we are providing them with a path to success that will pay future dividends for them, for their families and communities, and for all of us.”
The goal for this year’s Walk is $625,000, which will support students in Michigan.
Families, teachers and the community at large are invited to participate in the UNCF Walk for Education.  Participants can walk, run, or bike a 5k course through scenic and historic Belle Isle. Members of the community are invited to support UNCF and its students by forming a Walk for Education team or registering as individuals. UNCF is encouraging everyone to register early. Early registration fees are $30 for adults and $15 for children 12 years and under.
Co-chairs for the Detroit UNCF Walk for Education are Joya Shepard, Personnel Director, General Motors Company, Inda James, Pre-Production BOM Analyst, Ford Motor Company, Daphne Harris, Assistant Vice President & Administrator, The Chrysler Foundation, Anthony Johnson, President African American Alliance Metropolitan Detroit, Henkel Corporation and Marvin Rushing, Vice President & District Manager, Comerica Bank.
Sponsors for the UNCF Walk for Education include Kroger, Chrysler Group, LLC, Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., and their respective UAW chapters; Bridgewater Interiors; Comerica Bank; Delphi Foundation; Henkel; Meritor; Miller Canfield.
“We invite everyone in the Detroit community and surrounding areas to come out and walk to support our students,” said Barbara Jean Patton, Area Development Director, UNCF. “By supporting them now, we are giving them the education and preparation they need to have successful, secure financial futures and become the next generation of college-educated professionals, good citizens and effective leaders.”
UNCF awards more than 10,000 scholarships a year through more than 400 scholarships and other programs to students at more than 900 colleges and universities, including UNCF’s 37 member institutions.
