U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D) is planning to run for a 27th consecutive term in Congress.
The popular politician and the longest serving in the U.S. Congress has scheduled news conferences for next week in the Detroit area, Monday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. in Redford Township and 2 p.m. in Detroit.
The 86-year-old Conyers easily won his 26th consecutive term with a victory in the 13th District in the November 2014 general election.
Conyers first was elected in 1964 and has been in Congress since 1965. He has routinely been returned to Washington in his heavily Democratic district, often with more than 80 percent of the vote.
He is a former chair of the House Judiciary Committee and is a founding member and dean of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Conyers became Congress’ longest-serving member when John Dingell retired at the end of 2014.
