“Earn While You Learn” program focuses on enhancing the employability of metro Detroit youth
On Saturday, June 10, 2023, the Torch of Wisdom Foundation, Inc. (TOWF) and The Learning Network (TLN) celebrated a remarkable milestone as they marked the 10th year of their successful program aimed at preparing local teens for the workforce. The event, held at the Torch of Wisdom Foundation Plaza, was a culmination of five weeks of hard work and dedication by 24 talented metro Detroit high school students.
The TLN program, open to youth aged 16-19 in Oakland and Wayne Counties, offers a comprehensive five-week course designed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge necessary for their professional growth. Throughout the program, students had the opportunity to develop and refine their professional brands, receive mentorship and leadership development from experienced business professionals, and learn valuable lessons in resume writing, interviewing skills, financial literacy, and appropriate workplace attire.
What sets the TLN program apart is its unique “Earn While You Learn” approach. Students were rewarded with a stipend of $50 for every session they attended, simulating a real work environment. However, the program also instilled a sense of responsibility by reducing the pay of students who missed sessions or failed to complete assignments. This approach not only incentivized participation but also taught the importance of accountability and commitment.
The 2023 TLN cohort was comprised of 24 talented and motivated students who eagerly embraced the opportunity to enhance their employability and expand their horizons. The program, initially conceived by Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence and funded by the Phillip and Elizabeth Filmer Memorial Charitable Trust in 2013, has since become a crucial stepping stone for countless young individuals in the metro Detroit area.
The highlight of the event was the final pitch presentations by the TLN participants. The students had spent weeks developing mock business ideas, and their presentations showcased their creativity, entrepreneurial spirit, and newfound skills. The audience, including business leaders, government officials, and dignitaries, was captivated by the innovative ideas presented by the young entrepreneurs.
A distinguished panel of judges, consisting of former NBA player and sportscaster Greg Kelser, CEO of Madison International Sharon Madison, President of Real Times Media Cathy Nedd, and Vice President of Human Resources and Community Affairs at Bridgewater Interiors Elaine Tingle, had the challenging task of selecting the winners. The top performers were rewarded with financial prizes and brand-new Apple iPads, providing further encouragement and recognition for their remarkable achievements.
The closing ceremony was graced with the presence of Southfield Mayor Ken Siver and Wayne County Commissioner Alisha Bell, who delivered inspiring remarks to motivate the students to continue pursuing their dreams. Former Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence and Detroit Lions General Manager Brad Holmes also sent video messages, expressing their support and admiration for the TLN program and its participants.
Following the formal proceedings, attendees had the opportunity to interact with the TOWF and program leadership, students, and elected officials. Interviews and photo opportunities were conducted, capturing the excitement and pride that permeated the air.
