DETROIT — A thunderous sound to the return of concerts and events at The Aretha Amphitheatre, literally. Despite forecasted rain and storms, crowds gathered for the outdoor ambience of music again.
The Aretha kicked off its Wednesday Jazzy Nights summer line-up with renowned percussionist and singer Sheila E. and local artist Monica Blaire.
“This is the spot!”, said Laverne Williams of Detroit. Williams made it a night-out affair with her friend, Deneen Mayo. Both came with their lawn chairs and ready to groove. “I feel like I can breathe again. Outdoor venues for the summer is something that I live for.”
The riverfront entertainment venue sat quiet for nearly 14 months as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Sheila E., headliner of the night, didn’t miss a beat. She was paraded by band members in a festive fanfare, and she even invited fans to the stage in an energy-blazed dance-off.
“I’m blessed to be able to share the gift that God has gave me”, said Sheila E. “It’s exciting… I’m excited people will enjoy themselves for two hours of music, and laughter, and dancing, and having a great time.
The iconic drummer was once a show-opener for the late Prince and still cherishes her memories of him.
“There’s so much music that we played and created together. It was a part of my life. I was a part of his life. I was a part of his life. We met so long ago.”
The 63-year-old entertainer made Detroit a third stop on her summer tour.
