#SharetheMicNow: Detroit Women Speak on Racial Divide

Local entrepreneur, Khalilah Burt Gaston launches an independently organized series of conversations between Black and White women from Monday, August 17 – Wednesday, August 26, 2020. Modeled after Share The Mic Now, which launched in June 2020, the goal of this local campaign is to center the experiences of Black women in the current conversations about injustice and inequality and to explore the ways in which race and gender shape their experiences- both personally and professionally.

The recent spotlight on the Black Lives Matter movement highlighted the struggles of Black people against the many injustices of our nation, yet many times the conversations have managed to leave Black women, including members of the LBGQTIA community, standing on the outskirts and treated as an afterthought. As the national campaign asserted, “For far too long, Black

women’s voices have gone unheard, even though they’ve been using their voices loudly for centuries to enact change.” This collective of conversations prioritize the comfort and safety of Black women and centers their untold stories and experiences as white women shift the focus. The overall premise is that “Black women too” have perspective, struggles, and a voice. Gaston charges Detroit to #KeepSharingtheMic and do the work to create a better tomorrow.

Participants include many local leaders across law, public health, government, business and non-profit sectors including Donna Murray Brown, CEO of the Michigan Nonprofit Association, Lauren Hood, Director or New Programs, New Detroit, Palencia Mobley, Deputy Director and Chief Engineer at Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, Cathy Clark, Managing Partner, CCR Partners, Lisa Nuszkowski, Founder & Executive Director, MOGO, Detroit Bike Share and Erica Owens, Founder, Frugal on the Fly.
