The Gold Reserve, a Black- and woman-owned company, provides gold-infused skin care products.
“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy gold products. Which is pretty much the same thing.”
The Gold Reserve, a Black- and woman-owned skincare company in Detroit, is making waves as more customers are learning about the gold effect on melanated and non-melanated skin alike.
The Gold Reserve products were created to help people improve their skincare habits with high-quality ingredients and “make it easy to get the most out of your daily routine.”
At The Gold Reserve they want to provide customers with top-tier skincare, including gold face masks, peel masks and more. Their products are designed to help rejuvenate skin and make customers feel radiant, according to their website.
Chelsea Spencer, 29, the new company’s founder and owner, told the Michigan Chronicle recently that her online skincare line was created out of a need during the pandemic to infuse more self-care luxuries into everyday life.
“I was sitting there thinking and said, ‘Everybody loves gold [and] everyone likes certain things,’” Spencer said of launching her business last July. “It’s been very good – everyone seems to like it so far. Everything I sell has gold infused in it some way; either in like a flake or actually mixed into the mixture.”
The Gold Reserve wants to inspire self-care and self-confidence for all of its customers by offering a variety of gold skin products including facemasks, scrubs, serums, bath bombs and more.
From a Liquid Gold 24K Face Serum that can protect and revitalize faces by improving skin texture and radiance to Nefertiti’s Escape, a 24K gold peel-off face mask that can help you achieve smooth, glowing skin, these products are designed to provide a luxurious experience at an affordable price.
“Backed by a dedication to offering only products that provide a true element of luxury, you’re sure to love what we have to offer,” according to their website.

Spencer added that at the time she created her product line last year, people were still at home for the most part, and there was an interest to “bring the luxury spa [experience] to your house.”
And she’s not alone – many are into the growing self-care movement two years into the pandemic.
According to a Forbes article, New Mindbody Data Reflects How the Pandemic Has Renewed Interest in Self-Care, many people have increased their wellness routines in light of the devastating mental health impacts of the pandemic.
According to the article, wellness tech platform and app Mindbody’s research division team released data from the company’s millions of wellness providers and consumer users to show wellness-industry-related insights.
In the summer of 2021, they discovered that over 75 percent of United States consumers surveyed feel that wellness is more important than ever. Also, 50 percent plan to dole out more dollars on self-care over the next six months on activities, services and treatments. Nearly half also said they use meditation apps to assist with sleep or stress management.
Other products include an Egyptian Gold Hair Protein, King Midas’ Golden Touch Scrub, a three-pack bath bomb and hydrating face masks for everybody. Spencer added that the face mask is a customer favorite as word got around.
“I believe that social media is probably what makes it more popular as of right now and everybody is into self-care and manifesting and all of that kind of help and goes along with that,” Spencer said, adding that she is booked and busy at events locally and around the nation from pride festivals to the Black Women’s Expo.
“Most people are just now starting to get into it and they don’t really know a lot about it so … it’s more of educating on what our products can do for your skin first and then we’re making a sale,” she said, adding that her product line is reviewed by a licensed esthetician, dermatologist and other professionals.
Spencer added that there are benefits for “all skin types” using gold.
She said that entrepreneurship is about putting the work in and not waiting for anyone else to do the work for you.
“Do all your research – make sure you stay on top of everything going on,” Spencer said. “Don’t just expect things to be done — you need to check behind and make sure everything is right.”
Longtime supporter and product creator Dominique Willis, told the Michigan Chronicle that she makes 24-karat gold-infused bath bombs for the business and they have three different scents, all named after their kids: Carter (tea tree), Royalty (lavender) and Heiress (bergamot).
Working with Spencer, Willis said is like no other.
“Chelsea has been an awesome inspiration as well – she has inspired me to want to start my own small business and she has been very supportive and been awesome to work with her,” Willis said.
