At the 7th Annual Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) Career Development Conference (CDC), held recently in Lansing, more than 200 students from across the state gathered to compete in events showcasing employability skills.
Attached is a photo for editorial consideration highlighting some of the Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO) youth who competed and earned first place in the Creative Problem Solving category (there was a total of 10 youth who were on the NSO team). For most of them, this was their first experience in a competition.
Pictured are Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates Executive Director Kristin Harrington with Antwan Anderson, Dominique Epperson and Michael Jackson.
The half-day competition was held at the Lansing Center. Employers and industry experts across a variety of fields served as volunteer judges for the day. The event was made possible thanks to sponsorships by AT&T Michigan, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, Kinexus, United Way of Southwest Michigan, the State of Michigan’s Workforce Development Agency, the State of Michigan Talent Investment Agency, Walmart Foundations, USA Funds and Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) National.
The NSO YouthLink program, in collaboration with Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation, oversees Jobs for Michigan Graduates Out-of-School (JMG OOS) program, serving youth ages 16-24 at two eastside Detroit locations.
JMG OOS is a Michigan-based affiliate of Jobs for America’s Graduates, an organization that helps youth achieve successful transition into post-secondary education and employment by providing mentoring, job readiness, leadership development, and college and career-transition services. Step one for the young adults who dropped out of school is the desire to go back to earn their high school diploma or GED.
If you would like to speak with the NSO YouthLink Program Director Reggie Williams to learn more about the programs that support our youth and provide them with educational and employment opportunities, I would happily arrange that for you. He also can provide you with more details about the recent Career Development Conference and the proud team that took first place.
