Now Can We Get Back Down to Business?

steveGov. Rick Snyder was re-elected. That is about as surprising as it snowing during the winter months. Incumbents rarely lose.

One day — hopefully — we all see the futility in being divided along party lines — I wish there were no political parties, just candidates — and how counterproductive it is to sling mud, attempt to defame people, waste time expecting all Black people to think alike and walk in lockstep. The Creator gave us all a brain and no doubt expects us to use it.

I consider myself an Independent, but far more often than not I vote for Democratic candidates. They are more inclusive in their thinking, and more inclined to have compassion for those who have fallen on hard times, or who have been given a raw deal in life, period.

However, I am not at all sure that the Democratic Party has done as much as it is capable of in gratitude for the African-American community’s undying loyalty.

And here is something else: It is doubtful that endorsements mean nearly as much as they once perhaps did. I, for one, couldn’t care less who any newspaper — including this one — organization or union supports. I will make my own decisions.

Detroit, clearly, is on the upswing although a myriad of problems remain, such as crime — the reality of it and the perception.

There are good things happening all over, positive signs coming from not all, but many directions.

Mayor Mike Duggan has a lot to do with that and it so happens that he works well with the governor, which is a plus for the city. Duggan being elected mayor — a White write-in candidate in an overwhelming Black city — spoke volumes about what people are thinking.

They wanted someone who would help usher in change, and not just talk a good game. Things we can see, things we can feel, things we can hope for.

For more years than I care to think about, I have been uncomfortable telling people I am from Detroit. Now that tide is turning. I am not bursting with pride, but I feel certain that our “beleaguered city” days are in the early stages of becoming a thing of the past.

The election is over. We have work to do. Let’s get moving.
