It will be an evening celebrating music, history and public service for the benefit of Detroit youth, when the James Tatum Foundation for the Arts (JTFA) hosts its 23rd Annual Volunteer Reception on Nov. 18 at the First Congregational Living Museum in Detroit.  All proceeds will benefit the JTFA Scholarship Program.

Established in 1987 by James Tatum along with other educators, musicians and friends, JTFA is a nonprofit organization committed to identifying artistic ability in youth; nurturing individual talents; providing a public showcase for performances; and awarding scholarships to performing arts students for educational enhancement.

The theme of this year’s program is “A Night to Remember,” and the evening will feature “Journey to the Underground Railroad,” a video presentation of James Tatum as a 2009 “CNN Newsmaker,” silent auction, strolling dinner and musical performances, including 13-year-old violinist Hadiya Knight, who has already garnered high critical praise for her talents.

“It promises to be a wonderful evening for a wonderful cause,” said Loretta Smith, Comerica Bank vice president of Public Affairs.  “Comerica is proud to support the James Tatum Foundation and I encourage the community to come out on Nov. 18 and witness one of Detroit’s gem.”

Among the volunteer honorees is Luther Keith, executive director of ARISE Detroit!

“Luther Keith has truly collaborated with the Foundation. We would like to recognize him for enhancing our goals and objectives to the community,” Tatum said.  “He has helped the organization by providing us a venue to introduce an audience of more than 4,000 to JTFA at the 2010 “Ribs & Soul, Jazz and R&B Festival” at Hart Plaza.

“He also has helped the Foundation to raise funds to present the United Voices for Detroit Youth Ensemble. Thank you, Luther Keith of Arise Detroit!”

The First Congregational Living Museum is located at 33 Forest Avenue (at Woodward) in Detroit.  Tickets are $65 in advance; $75 at the door. For tickets or group rates contact the James Tatum Foundation for the Arts at 313-255-9015.

The James Tatum Foundation for the Arts has awarded more than $300,000 to more than 500 Michigan high school graduates seeking higher education with majors in the performing and visual arts.  More than 95 percent of past recipients are now professional educators or artists around the world.
