
As part of National Heart Health Month and to create awareness about the importance of heart health, Molina Healthcare is teaming up with The National Coalition of 100 Black Women’s Detroit Chapter to “Dance for Heart Health” by hosting a Zumba class. The free event is open to the public and the first 75 people in attendance will receive a free “Dance for Heart Health” T-shirt.
Participants will also have the chance to win raffle prizes including an iPad mini, iPods and gift cards. A raffle ticket can be “purchased” by completing a heart healthy activity such as jumping jacks, push-ups or jumping rope.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Michigan, one in four deaths per year is due to heart disease. Many of the risk factors for heart disease, such as family history, cannot be altered, but there are ways to minimize risk including eating a healthy diet, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight, reducing stress, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol and taking medication.
Dancing is a fun and cost-effective way to generate health benefits that requires no equipment and anyone can do. It is an activity that can help regulate your body weight and build cardiovascular endurance. With so many different styles from hip hop, line dancing to ballet, the hardest part is finding the right style for you!
The heart pumping event will be held at Rosedale Park Baptist Church Tuesday, at 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on February 25.
