MDP chair Lon Johnson announced his resignation as Chair of the Michigan Democratic
Party effective July 11. Johnson is departing the post to compete in the race for
Michigan's 1st Congressional District.
"We have worked hard over the past few years to strengthen our infrastructure and
grow the party," said Johnson. "As a result, the MDP is well-positioned to achieve
the ambitious goals we have set. I welcome a successor who will build on those
efforts and lead Michigan Democrats to victory in 2016 and beyond."
State Central Delegates, already slated to meet prior to Mr. Johnson's announcement,
will convene as scheduled on July 11 in Port Huron. Candidates will be nominated and
a successor elected during that meeting. Under the Party's Rules, State Central
Delegates and Executive Committee members are eligible to vote to elect a new Chair.
