Sebastian Jackson, 28, was born in Flint, MI and raised on Detroit’s west side before moving to Kalamazoo where he attended high school. He returned to Detroit to study Public Relations at Wayne State University in 2004. He now owns a business on the main campus of Wayne State University called The Social Club.
The Social Club is a barbershop concept that impacts the community and natural environment. TSC focuses on providing personal grooming services for the purpose of recycling the byproducts of those services to help with urban reforestation.
All of the hair clippings collected at the Social Club are used as a nitrogen source in compost. Every 12 pounds of hair collected provides an extremely efficient nitrogen source, which helps sustain the growth of 10 sapling (baby trees). 12 pounds of hair equals nitrogen for 10 trees growth.
Most recently, Sebastian and his Social Club have been recognized by Turner Networks as apart of a 5 episode documentary series featuring innovative start-ups throughout the country. This series will air in November on HLN and CNN.
