McKinney Foundation Exec. Director recognized for work in creating a healthier Detroit

mckinneyOn the heels of a successful 6th Annual “Celebrating a Healthier Detroit” Expo, McKinney Foundation Co-Founder and Executive Director Tiah E. McKinney was recognized for her work on promoting health equity through education by Native Detroiter Magazine August 22.
An estimated 400-500 people, all adorned in white clothing, jammed the Roberts Riverwalk Hotel and Resort on a picturesque summer evening in Detroit for the Native Detroiter magazine annual affair. McKinney was among a number of honorees, recognized for their outstanding efforts in community and civic service.
“I am honored and humbled to be recognized,” said McKinney, who along with Jerry Dale co-founded the McKinney Foundation in 2010. “As an organization, we are grateful to Native Detroiter magazine for affirming the work we do of promoting health equity through education,” she added.
On August 5, the McKinney Foundation held its 6th Annual “Celebrating a Healthier Detroit” Expo at William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor in Detroit. The day- long event featured more than 50 health and wellness experts providing insight on ways to prevent an array of diet and lifestyle conditions including: childhood obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, asthma and depression.
More than 500 people attended the expo which featured a Family Fun Run, group exercise and healthy cooking demonstrations as well as seminars from board certified physicians. U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, State Rep. LaTanya Garrett and Detroit City Councilman Gabe Leland urged the public to make health and wellness choices part of their everyday lives.
“We see our “Celebrating a Healthier Detroit” Expos as fun filled days with the serious purpose of promoting health equity in Metro Detroit,” McKinney said. “We are already making plans for next year’s event, slated for August 10, 2016 at Milliken State Park,” McKinney concluded.
