Mayor Duggan's statement on Detroit City Council's approval of municipal IDs

images_mikeduggan2Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has issued the following statement in response to the Detroit City Council’s passage today of an ordinance allowing for municipal IDs:
“We have been working closely with Councilwoman Castaneda-Lopez and the rest of Council on this program, and I look forward to our launch of the municipal ID program this fall. No one deserves to live in the shadows of our society. This is everyone’s city, and everyone deserves to enjoy all of the opportunities Detroit has to offer. This program ensures that all Detroiters, no matter their status or housing situation, have access to those opportunities.
“This move helps our community’s most vulnerable, from our homeless to the elderly to undocumented immigrants. Everyone in our city will now be able to do the things that many of us take for granted, whether it’s getting a library card, opening a bank account or accessing city services. Today, the Detroit City Council has helped make our city more inclusive and welcoming to all.”
