Whether a Michigan fan or not, chances are you were tuned into last night’s NCAA championship game.
The Wolverines faced off against Louisville in a match up that kept fans on the their toes until the end. It’s the first time in 20 years the team has made it to the Final Four, let alone the championships. Not since Michigan’s Fab Five, has its Men’s Basketball team achieved such a feat. While things didn’t end up exactly as Maize and Blue fans wanted, the team did not go home empty handed.
At the very least, its members bring back to Ann Arbor a strong sense of accomplishment. They’ve learned lessons that can be used to better prepare for the next season. Beyond the relevancy of a win, it’s important to keep in mind what their success truly means. The young Michigan team has ushered in a new era, setting a new standard of excellence that will go down as one of the brightest moments we’ve witnessed.
I’m proud to be a Wolverine. UM Ann Arbor is my alma mater, and few things make me happier than to share it with others. It’s something I don’t always keep in mind, and hardly didn’t when enrolled on campus. It’s easy to get caught up in the experience, and forget what you’re there for. You can take for granted great opportunities. That’s one of the most tremendous lessons I learned at the university, and it didn’t come out of a book.
Michigan is so much more than athletics. It’s so much more than academics, even. Sometimes, I look back on my experience and revel at the possibilities. Had I known what I know now, I would have ceased more moments and taken advantage of what I now understand is a uniquely multifaceted experience. What more can I say? It’s the Michigan Difference!
There’s a responsibility that those who are a part of the school’s legacy must carry on and off the court. I’ve never been much of an athlete, however I can attest to the standard of excellence I seek to proclaim in my own life. It’s one that transcends the experiences of friends, family members and colleagues.
So, while UM b-ball fans will feel down for a brief moment, there’s no need to fret. At the end of the day, we might have lost the battle but we win the war.
It’s still great to be a Michigan Wolverine. Go blue!
