It’s Christmastime and during the holidays, charities [especially this year] are requesting the help of others who can spread a bit of holiday cheer in the form of monetary giving and more. This non-exhaustive list is a roundup of ways to give to those in need and keep the holiday spirits bright amidst the pandemic:
- Non-profit organization Capuchin Soup Kitchen is selling Christmas cards made by children in their Rosa Parks Children’s Program. The $15 cards can spread Christmas cheer while offering support to Capuchin Soup Kitchen’s mission.
Purchase Capuchin Soup Kitchen Christmas Cards in any of the following ways:
- Buy online at the Solanus Casey Center online gift shop, or purchase in-person at the Solanus Casey Center Gift Shop located at 1780 Mt. Elliott St. in Detroit. Or order by phone by calling the Solanus Casey Center Gift Shop at (313) 308-0650.
- For generic donations to the support of the Capuchin ministries online to support their work of giving those in need food and clothing go to https://www.cskdetroit.org/online-donations.
- The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is looking for the public to provide them a monetary gift to help those most vulnerable in metro Detroit. Monetary donations help provide the essential funds of food, shelter and hope to those hurting locally in the community. To donate visit https://centralusa.salvationarmy.org/emi/ and click “donate.”
- The Harold and Kay Fund is matching every monetary donation to Forgotten Harvest dollar for dollar – up to $50,000 – until December 31. The money will be used to feed families in need during this especially trying time in the metro Detroit community. According to Forgotten Harvest statistics, nearly 600,000 people live in poverty – including over 197,000 children and nearly 55,000 seniors over the age of 65. During this holiday season, donations to Forgotten Harvest will allow for the continued delivery of thousands of pounds of surplus food daily to local charities six days a week. Visit https://forgottenharvest.giv.sh/050a for more information.
- The non-profit organization, Mittens for Detroit, is looking to keep local hands warm this holiday season, in particular for those who are homeless or in transition. And for the thousands of children and adults in Detroit, a pair of gloves to protect them from outside elements in this cold weather is something they are unable to purchase on their own. But a donation can make the organization one step closer to its goal of providing over 53,000 pairs of new mittens and gloves to those who need them. A cash donation of $35 buys five pairs of adult gloves that would retail at $20 each. Donations can be made online at http://bit.ly/Donate_MFD. Checks may be made out to Mittens for Detroit. Donations may be mailed to Mittens for Detroit, Attn: W. Shepherd, PO Box 721427, Berkley, MI 48072.
- Wayne County-based Starfish Family Services supports nonprofits that serve over 4,000 families for resources, care, and connection during these turbulent times. Year-end donations help sustain others to continue helping local families. Find out more information or donate here: starfishfamilyservices.org/make-a-donation.
- The Detroit Goodfellows has been part of the community for 106 years. Many of its members and supporters remember receiving holiday packages when they were children and continue to support the organization today because of those thoughtful donations that made their Christmas a little bit more memorable. Their holiday boxes contain a mix of the practical and the fun – like warm winter clothes and the dental kits, along with age-appropriate toys, games, books, and other items in high demand. For more information go to https://www.detroitgoodfellows.org/ and click the “donate” button.
- Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, which serves the disadvantaged, is looking for donations during this holiday season for one of their many locations in the Detroit area where they help the homeless, hungry, and hurting. This Christmas season, visit www.drmm.org/donate or call 313-993-4700 for more information on how to give to those who need it most.
