I-96 Reopens to Traffic Eight Days Ahead of Schedule

There was an celebration Sunday in honor of the I-96 Reconstruction Project which reopened eight day earlier than projected. The news should bring big smiles to commuters Monday morning as the newly rebuilt highway will meet it’s first morning rush hour.

In the interim an estimated 10,000 people or more flooded the freeway in the rain Sunday afternoon. A 1.7 mile to walk, bike, run a 4-lane section of westbound I-96 between Stark and Newburgh.

Governor Rick Snyder was also among the crowd congratulating workers for completing the project early and on-budget and thanking drivers for their patience. The 7 miles of the freeway got a facelift from Telegraph Rd. in Redford Township to Newburgh Rd. in Livonia.
