Henry Ford Health System is recruiting volunteers to receive trial covid-19 vaccines developed by Moderna.

The Michigan medical institution is the only hospital system in the state selected as a Phase 3 trial site for a COVID-19 vaccine.

“Henry Ford Health System is proud to be part of the fight against this deadly virus,” says Adnan Munkarah, executive vice president and chief clinical officer of Henry Ford. “As one of the region’s major academic medical centers with more than $100 million in annual research funding, Henry Ford is involved in numerous COVID-19 efforts with partners around the world.”

Designed to facilitate effective treatment, the Moderna mRNA-1273 Coronavirus Efficacy (COVE) vaccine study is done in stages. Over 600 participants reported having safe experiences with the vaccine. If successfully administered during the last stage of study, the vaccine will be considered for approval before being released to the general public.

“Our best hope of controlling COVID-19 is with a vaccine,” says Dr. Marcus Zervos, division chief of infectious disease for Henry Ford. “The Moderna vaccine seems to be very promising. In the initial studies that have been done so far, it looks to be safe and has produced protective antibodies at the level of a natural infection.”

The double-blind study encourages the use of both a vaccine and a placebo. All participants have a 50% chance of receiving the vaccine. Reported side effects of the two-dose administered vaccine include a sore arm at the site of injection, redness, a fever, or muscle aches.

A total of 30,000 participants are needed to complete the study. Researchers are encouraging adults whose locations or circumstances put them at greater risk of exposure, adults who are 65 or older, and adults who are high-risk due to pre-existing medical conditions that are stable at the time of screening to volunteer in the trial. Persons over the age of 18 who are not immune-compromised, pregnant, or planning to become pregnant are also encouraged to volunteer for the study if they have not had COVID-19 or any related treatment.

Interested Michiganders can physically enroll at one of three sites: the Henry Ford Hospital Emergency Department in Detroit, New Center One Building, and the HAP building located across the street from the Henry Ford Hospital or via the web at https://www.henryford.com/modernavaccine.

Study participants will be monitored over the course of two years. Those who complete the study will receive $1,000.
