At the beginning of the year, free, state-distributed filters were made available to Flint residents. The water filters were tested by the EPA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Tests confirmed that the filters removed lead to beloW 15 parts per billion, the EPA’s action level.
The filters, which are certified by NSF International, are confirmed to be safe by the EPA’s findings and those of other state, local and federal agencies.
In a statement, Tom Burke, EPA Science Advisor and Deputy Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Research and Development, endorsed the filters and shared his outlook for Flint’s future. “These findings reaffirm the effectiveness of filters at removing or reducing lead. This is an important step forward for providing a stable water system for the City of Flint.”
