Empowering Survivors as T. Rose Foundation Unites Michigan for Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness

A shared sense of urgency brings us together this October as the T. Rose Foundation hosts its Pink & Purple on Purpose events. Focused on raising awareness for both Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, these gatherings bring survivors, community members, and supporters together in a deeply personal way. With stops in Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Flushing, Michigan, the events are more than a simple acknowledgment of struggle—they are about making space for the stories, resilience, and resources that survivors need.

Theresa Randleman, founder of the T. Rose Foundation, leads these efforts with a clear vision—bridging the gap between awareness and tangible support. “Pink & Purple on Purpose is our way of giving voice to the brave survivors of breast cancer and domestic violence while ensuring that they know they are not alone. We hope to not only raise awareness but also provide real support and tangible resources to those who need it most,” Randleman stated. Her words set the tone for these events, which prioritize the needs of survivors above all else.

At each of the locations—whether Grand Rapids, Detroit, or Flushing—the format remains consistent. An evening of intimate conversation and community bonding begins with a warm hors d’oeuvres reception. As attendees gather, the opportunity to connect with others who share a passion for advocacy or who have been impacted by breast cancer or domestic violence serves as a foundation for deeper dialogue. These aren’t casual social events; these are carefully curated moments that create space for survivors to be heard.

The centerpiece of each event is a panel discussion featuring survivors, whose lived experiences offer not only inspiration but also a reminder of the struggles they continue to endure. These stories serve as a lifeline for others—listeners who may not have known they had allies in their journey. The conversation is not just about survival but about thriving in the face of adversity. Attendees will walk away knowing more about the nuances of these issues, understanding how breast cancer and domestic violence intersect in ways that challenge both the medical and social systems designed to support them.

Beyond the stories, practical action steps are interwoven throughout the evening. The T. Rose Foundation actively calls for community members to donate essential items—blankets, scarves, socks, and personal care items—that will be distributed to both shelters for domestic violence survivors and patients currently battling cancer. The need for these items is immediate and real. These donations are not only accepted at the events themselves, but attendees can also contribute through the foundation’s Gift Registry on Amazon, a thoughtful and convenient way to give back. Items collected will be packaged and distributed by event participants, making this an action-oriented gathering where the community directly meets the needs of survivors.

While each location offers a unique setting, the goal remains constant. Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Flushing will host these events with the intention of expanding the reach of resources available to survivors. In Grand Rapids on October 26, attendees will gather at Calvin University for a $25 ticketed event. Flushing will host its own on October 28 at Signature Chop House, offering a similar experience. For those in Detroit, the event on October 29 at BasBlue is free to attend, thanks to the generosity of the venue.

As these events approach, the importance of coming together as a community to support one another cannot be overstated. Randleman and the T. Rose Foundation have created a platform where survivors are not just honored, but equipped with the resources and support they need to continue their journeys. The events also provide an opportunity for allies, advocates, and the broader community to step forward in solidarity, offering both emotional and material support to those who need it.

Breast cancer and domestic violence impact many lives, disproportionately affecting Black women, and these events serve as a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive support systems. Survivors often face battles that extend beyond their initial diagnosis or traumatic experience, requiring sustained community support to heal fully. The T. Rose Foundation’s initiative recognizes this need and invites everyone to play a role in this healing process.

Those interested in attending or contributing can register through Eventbrite or contact the foundation directly. It’s not enough to simply be aware of these issues—these events challenge us to engage, listen, and take action. By doing so, we honor the stories of survivors and create pathways for future generations to navigate these struggles with a stronger, more supportive community behind them.

This October, the T. Rose Foundation calls on Michigan to show up. Whether it’s through attending an event, donating essential items, or simply spreading the word, every action counts. Together, we can ensure that breast cancer and domestic violence survivors feel the support of a community that stands with them—Pink & Purple on Purpose.
