Dream Detroit Skating Academy Presents 2nd Annual Ice Show: ‘Grooving through Time

Detroit’s pioneering black woman-owned figure skating club, Dream Detroit Skating Academy (DDSA), is thrilled to present their 2nd Annual Ice Show, “Grooving through Time,” from May 19 to May 21, 2023. The event will take place at Detroit’s Jack Adams Ice Arena.

The DDSA 2nd Annual Ice Show, “Groovin’ through Time,” will feature captivating performances by talented youth skaters showcasing their figure skating skills. This spectacular show is the culmination of ten months of hard work, dedication, and commitment from the skaters. Expect a mesmerizing display of complex group performances and individual solos. The show will be a celebration of the incredible progress made by these young skaters.

Since its launch in January 2022, DDSA has introduced figure skating to approximately 200 youths from Detroit and the surrounding area. In just ten months, this groundbreaking club has not only provided an opportunity for many Detroit youths to experience figure skating for the first time but has also begun introducing beginner-level elements to returning skaters. DDSA is introducing a whole new generation to the world of figure skating.

“Last season was about getting started,” said DDSA Co-Owner Candice Tamakloe. “But this season, the Dream Team is focused on growth, not only for our skaters but also for our small yet expanding club. That’s why we have added more value for our clients.”

This season, DDSA is enhancing its competitive advantage by providing extended session times and keeping tuition fees affordable. The additional time will support skaters in strengthening their skills and offer built-in rehearsal time for upcoming performances like the ice show. The Dream Team, the dedicated DDSA staff, has also secured “practice ice” at the Jack Adams Memorial Ice Arena for skaters to visit between weekly classes and improve their skills.

DDSA will be hosting an abbreviated six-week Learn to Skate Summer Program starting in June. The 2023-24 skating season will be divided into three sessions, with enrollment for Detroit residents beginning in July 2023.

DDSA enrollment includes the following benefits:

  1. Group lessons with a trained figure skating professional
  2. Full membership with the U.S. Figure Skating Learn to Skate Program (USFS)
  3. Learn to Skate skills tests and badges
  4. Participation in DDSA’s annual Ice Shows
  5. Opportunity to compete in local competitions
  6. Options for private lessons with a trained figure skating professional
  7. Practice ice time
  8. Full membership with the Adam-Butzel Recreation Center

“We are excited to showcase our figure skaters in a phenomenal way that raises awareness of the sport in Detroit,” explained Angela Blocker-Loyd, DDSA Co-Owner. “We are proud of the Dream Team Staff and the skaters for their unwavering commitment to figure skating.”

Dream Detroit’s skaters and staff will host three performances over the weekend: Friday, May 19 at 6:30 pm, Saturday, May 20 at 5:00 pm, and Sunday, May 21 at 3:00 pm.
