Reading Emergency
You can do something individually, or with your organization, church or agency, to directly help Detroit’s youngest students and to ensure that by 2015 all students are reading at grade level or above by the time they reach third grade. DPS has created a Reading Corps, and so far more than 3,200 individuals have come forward to volunteer a minimum of one hour per week to tutor in preschool classrooms. The effort has the support of the teachers’ union leadership and many other groups in town.
Robert Bobb, the district’s Emergency Financial Manager, states that the extreme reading emergency should not paralyze the community. We agree. The Reading Corps provides an opportunity for everyone to do their part, right now.
