Legendary WXYZ-TV Anchor Diana Lewis has been named honorary chair of the first annual Strides for Seniors Walk & Expo which, will take place on Saturday, September 26th from 8 am to Noon at the Wayne State University Community Arts Building on Cass and Kirby.
Lewis and Paul Bridgewater, Campaign Chair and President/CEO of Detroit Area Agency on Aging, will lead the one-mile walk beginning at 9 am. The community will walk together to help raise awareness of key aging issues and funding for senior programs.
The expo – which kicks off at 8:00 am – will include exhibitors offering information on social and educational activities, health and wellness, housing, home health care, and much more.
September is National Senior Center month, and the walk and expo will wrap-up a 30-day collaborative campaign effort by five metro Detroit senior activity centers: LA SED Senior Center, Hannan Center for Lifelong Learning, Peoples Community Services of Metropolitan Detroit, Services for Older Adults and St. Patrick Senior Center. The participating centers are also hosting activities at their facilities, and all invite the public to visit and learn about the variety of fun, social and health activities happening at your local senior center.
“With increased education and awareness of the issues facing senior citizens, aging can be a lively, healthy process; entering the golden years doesn’t have to be dismal and scary,” says Ms. Lewis. “I am excited to be a part of “Strides for Seniors” as this walk and expo combined with the efforts of the metro Detroit senior centers are changing the aging experience for the better!”
The Strides for Seniors Walk & Expo is sponsored by CIENA Healthcare, Detroit Area Agency on Aging, Nativity of Our Lord Church, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan and the Tom and Carol Cracchiolo.
