The first Legacy Ball started 8 years ago in Grand Rapids and then expanded to Kalamazoo a few years later. The event chairperson is Shirley A. Berger, a lifelong Detroiter and Detroit Police Department Retiree. She attended a celebration in Grand Rapids, Michigan and loved the concept of this unique community celebration. “I am very proud of my city and its accomplishments and wanted my community to participate in this awesome celebration. I am a proud Detroiter! The contributions of African Americans to society are monumental; however, black history is everybody’s history. There is no better way for the community to celebrate progress and continuing the legacy than through education and giving back. I was enlightened, enriched and joyfully connected after the events.”
Jessica Ann Tyson is the visionary of the Legacy Events. “My goal is to revitalize communities, encourage diversity with other cultures/backgrounds and continue to be inspired by the significant contributions that Blacks have and continued to make.” She is also proud that events have benefited local communities with more than $80,000 back to minority student scholarship programs, Black non-profit and community organizations.
A reservation for the 2016 Detroit Legacy Ball is $100.00.
