@DetroitMBB hosts Wayne State City College Series today at Calihan Hall

wsu-college-seriesIt will be a battle for city pride, but more important, a contest of charity and benevolence as the University of Detroit Mercy men’s basketball team welcomes city-rival Wayne State in the inaugural “City College Series” to benefit Detroit Public Schools, grades K-5.
The action will tip-off on Dick Vitale Court in historic Calihan Hall at 7 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 29. Tickets are just $2 each and can be purchased over the phone or at the door (no online sales).
The in-state rivalry will serve as the kickoff of Detroit Mercy’s new “City College Series,” a sponsorship formed with Michigan First Credit Union to raise money for DPS with the aid of a basketball game between local academic institutions in the city. All proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to Detroit Public Schools to provide financial assistance for the district’s K-5 classrooms with Michigan First contributing a matching donation for all tickets sold.
With the game benefiting DPS, the night will feature a number of Motor City products including 10 total student-athletes from Detroit and four coaches who all have early roots in the city.
The game will not be on ESPN3 or on the Titan airwaves so the only way to take part in the event is to come out and support the Titans and Warriors’ community service initiative.
The meeting is the first since the squads played an exhibition game on Nov. 19, 2002, a 73-65 victory for the red, white and blue. During the regular season, the Titans own a 33-13 career record against their Motor City counterparts with the last official match-up on Nov. 20, 2000, a 98-73 win.
The game is also the first of two exhibitions on the year for Detroit Mercy, who will also host Ferris State on Monday, Nov. 7.
The regular season will kick-off on Friday, Nov. 11, as the Titans start season No. 110 against Adrian at home in Calihan Hall.
