The Detroit Transit Police have captured and arrested Michael Lee Grayson, 19, who is suspected of abducting 3-year-old Marvie Gardner early this morning.
Responding to a report that a male was seen taking a small child into an abandoned house at 19309 Biltmore, the Detroit Police Department searched the premises and recovered the kidnapped boy unharmed at 1:35 p.m.
At 2:15 p.m., Detroit Transit Police Car 2 responded to a report that the kidnapping suspect boarded a coach on 7 Mile Road. Transit Car 1 reported it would assist and contacted DDOT Dispatch to check its AVL bus locator to locate the bus. DDOT identified the bus as Coach 1500, heading eastbound on 7 Mile Road. DTP tracked and boarded the stopped bus at 7 Mile Road and Ryan.
Detroit Transit Police Officers Raymond Carr and David Weise boarded the coach and took the suspect into custody without incident. Detroit Transit Police Sergeant Derrick Russ and Detroit Transit Police Lieutenant William Hart arrived on the scene and were told by the suspect Grayson that he left something on the bus. Sgt. Russ and Lt. Hart tracked down the bus at 7 Mile Road and Goulburn and recovered the suspect’s coat with a butcher knife wanted by the 8th Precinct detectives in conjunction with the kidnapping.
Detroit Transit Police Officers Carr and Weise transported Grayson to the Detroit Detention Center.
“I commend Officers Carr and Weise, Sgt. Russ and Lt. Hart for their rapid response which enabled them to quickly apprehend the suspect without incident,” stated Detroit Transit Police Chief Sidney Bogan. “I also thank the citizens who provided vital information about observing the suspect which ultimately led to his capture.”
