Music on the QLINE anyone?
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) recently celebrated the launch of single tickets for the 2022-2023 season with a special chamber music performance by a trio of DSO musicians on Detroit’s QLINE on Wednesday, August 17 in Detroit playing classical songs and a classical twist to Motown’s “My Girl” song.
DSO musicians Rachel Harding Klaus (Violin), Mike Chen (Viola), and Cole Randolph (Cello) were joined by President and CEO Erik Rönmark to launch the on-sale of single tickets for the DSO’s full range of offerings including PVS Classical, PNC Pops, Paradise Jazz, Young Peoples Family Concerts, and William Davidson Neighborhood concerts. The unique performance marked the journey to the new season, traveling along Woodward Avenue to Orchestra Hall in a true representation of Detroit’s connectivity and accessibility of the arts.
“We hope attending one of the outstanding performances we are offering this season inspires our community to come back again and again, making the DSO and Orchestra Hall one of their regular entertainment destinations,” Rönmark said.
The DSO’s 2022-2023 season begins on September 21 with The Music of Star Wars at Orchestra Hall and continues with a full range of programming throughout the season.
On the PVS Classical Series, which begins September 30 – October 2, DSO Music Director Jader Bignamini will conduct ten of the season’s 20 classical weeks and mark his second full season in the role. The DSO will perform 14 works by living composers during the 2022-2023 season, which include two world premieres and six DSO-commissioned works. The DSO will highlight 18 works by women and people of color, including new works by Michael Abels, Tania León, Carlos Simon, and Brian Raphael Nabors. Renowned guest conductors include Han-Na Chang, JoAnn Falletta, Jonathon Heyward, Enrique Mazzola, Matthias Pintscher, and Leonard Slatkin; with soloists including Augustin Hadelich, Stephen Hough, Leila Josefowicz, Anthony McGill, Garrick Ohlsson, Yeol Eum Son, and Davóne Tines.
The PNC Pops Series, which begins October 7 – 9, will bring favorites from Broadway, film and TV, rock, pop, and more to the Orchestra Hall stage. DSO Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik will lead three programs: Prohibition, a multimedia musical journey through the era with music channeling Rudy Vallée, Josephine Baker, Kurt Weill, and King Oliver; Sci-Fi Spectacular: Star Wars, Star Trek, and Beyond!, with music from iconic sci-fi film scores; and Twist & Shout: The Music of the Beatles, a program celebrating The Beatles in America. Other PNC Pops Series highlights include tributes to ABBA, Elton John, and Detroit’s own Aretha Franklin; a journey through the music of Latin America and the US with the Mambo Kings; a program of music by Frank Sinatra and more; music by Stephen Sondheim and friends; and the beloved Home for the Holidays program, a holiday favorite that sells out year after year.
The Paradise Jazz Series launches on October 14 with trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, who holds the DSO’s Fred A. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair. Other jazz highlights include appearances by Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, A Charlie Brown Christmas with pianist Cyrus Chestnut, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and vocalist Thana Alexa, bassist Christian McBride’s New Jawn, and the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour with vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling. The DSO’s Young People’s Family Concerts and Tiny Tots series both return as does the William Davidson Neighborhood Concerts Series.
