Today, Dec. 1, is World AIDS Day.
And yes, AIDS is still here. Just because it’s not in the headlines doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
Just to give you an idea how much of an impact AIDS still has upon metro Detroit, here are a few sobering figures from AIDSVu:
New Diagnoses
- Number of new HIV diagnoses in 2014: 361
- 78% of people newly diagnosed with HIV between 2010 and 2014 were men, and 22% were women.
- 81% of people newly diagnosed with HIV between 2010 and 2014 were black, 3% Hispanic/Latino, and 14% white.
- The rate of black males living with an HIV diagnosis is 6.0 times that of white males.
- The rate of black females living with an HIV diagnosis is 12.7 times that of white females.
