Dance Theatre of Harlem, a leading dance institution of unparalleled global acclaim, will return to the Detroit Opera House October 21-22, 2023 as the third stop of the Company’s 2023-2024 tour.
The Company will perform a mixed repertory program that features a variety of styles, from classical ballet to contemporary. Highlights include Allegro Brillante, a jubilant piece by George Balanchine; Blake Works IV, a contemporary ballet by William Forsythe; When Love, a duet set to music by Philip Glass; and Return, a witty fusion of ballet and street dance choreographed by Artistic Director Robert Garland.
Dance Theatre of Harlem has a long and storied history with Detroit. The Company first visited the city in 1976, and has returned on numerous occasions since. The Company’s founder, Arthur Mitchell, was a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion in the arts, and he believed that dance was a powerful tool for social change.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dance Theatre of Harlem back to Detroit,” said Wayne S. Brown, President & CEO of the Detroit Opera House. “The Company is a staple among the world’s preeminent dance companies, and their performances are always inspiring.”
In addition to its performances, Dance Theatre of Harlem will also offer a variety of community events and classes in Detroit. These events will provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn more about dance and the Company’s history.
“We are committed to making dance accessible to everyone,” said Artistic Director Robert Garland. “Our community events and classes are a great way for people to learn more about dance and the Company’s mission.”
