Children’s Hospital of Michigan Auxiliary Holiday Card Features the Detroit Institute of Arts’ Megan Homanick

The 2015 Children’s Hospital of Michigan Auxiliary holiday card artwork contest winner is Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Studio Assistant Megan Homanick. The holiday card sale is the major fundraiser for the Auxiliary. Proceeds from the cards, which are available for purchase online and at select retail outlets, support children and their families that face health-related challenges.
As a studio assistant in the Department of Interpretation and Learning at the DIA, Homanick works on several programs at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM), including the Photo Club, Bedside Healing Arts & the Healing Garden.
“Working the CHM Healing Garden program over the past five years has been such an amazing opportunity,” said Homanick. “The patients and families I have met have continued to show me that art can play such a major role in finding the joy in everyday life… To be able to do so outside during the summer in such a beautiful, peaceful place as the (Healing) Garden is an added benefit for everyone who participates in the program.”
Homanick is also a local Clawson High School art teacher, and a resident of Berkley, Michigan.
The card features a wintery scene with children playing under a starry sky. “I was inspired (to create this piece of art) by the wonderful state of Michigan,” Homanick said. “Winter is so special here and I wanted to convey the fun that all kids (and adults) have growing up in a place where nature is just magical during the holidays.” The inside of the card reads, “May your Holiday sparkle with moments of love, laughter and goodwill.”
Founded in 1949, the Auxiliary raises funds to benefit projects and programs which support pediatric patients and their families throughout southeast Michigan.
The holiday cards are $20 for a pack of 20 cards. Cards may be imprinted with the sender’s name for an additional cost.
