The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and MIX 92.3 are joining forces to conduct a three-day Radiothon to benefit the Museum. The fundraising event, a first for the Museum, will take place during the Frankie Darcell and Oneil Stevens shows, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 18 and 19.
The Radiothon’s grand finale occurs on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., during a live broadcast at the Museum, located at 315 E. Warren in Detroit. Supporters who bring a minimum donation of $10 to the Museum that day will be treated to a guided tour of the core exhibit, And Still We Rise.
In addition, MIX 92.3 is holding a benefit performance at the Museum on Saturday, February 20, featuring Detroit’s native son and Universal Republic recording artist K’Jon and two-time Grammy nominee Ledisi. Tickets must be purchased in advance on the MIX web site, and all proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Museum.
“Our goal is to increase awareness of and support for the Museum at a grassroots level,” said Juanita Moore, the Museum’s President and CEO. “The MIX’s audience is tailor-made for reaching large numbers of potential donors for whom the Museum is an important cultural and educational institution. By attracting hundreds of first-time donors making gifts of $10, $25 and $50, we hope to develop a significant funding resource in support of our operations and programs.”
As with similar fundraisers, donors will receive special gifts based on the amount of their paid donations, starting at $35. All who give that amount or more will receive a complimentary individual membership. Those making larger donations will receive environmentally friendly tote bags or free admission passes or exclusive guided tours, depending on the size of their gift. Donors of $1,500 or more will get all of these items and have their names inscribed on a seat in the Museum’s GM Theatre.
Special donor incentives will also be offered during select hours of the Radiothon. The incentives, which have been donated by local businesses, include tickets to Detroit Tigers games, passes from Uptown Entertainment to the Ren Cen 4 movie theatre, Burger King and Auntie Annie’s coupons, and Annie Lee figurines.
Top donors may receive, depending on the time they call in with their gifts, a special Night on the Town package provided by some of Detroit’s finest hotels and restaurants. Night on the Town sponsors include the Marriott Renaissance; MGM Grand; Greektown; the Hilton Garden Inn; Andiamo’s; Detroit Fish Market; Seldom Blues; Tom’s Oyster Bar and The Whitney.
“We are very appreciative of the response we have received from local businesses, especially from our top sponsors Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and Pepsi,” said Museum COO, Tyrone Davenport. Other Radiothon sponsors include Burger King, Lewis and Munday, Metro Cars, St. John Health System and UAW Region 1A. “WTVS-Channel 56 and George Johnson and Company are providing significant operational advice and material support to help make the Radiothon a success,” he added.
In addition, a special supplement to the Michigan Chronicle and The Front Page was published on Feb. 10, to inform readers about the Museum’s current programs and activities, and to encourage them to make donations the following week.
