Local industry leaders will gather for thought-provoking dialogue during the American Heart Association’s inaugural “Go Red Talks” on Tuesday, Oct. 20th at the Gem Theatre, located at 333 Madison St. in Detroit from 6:30 pm – 9 pm. The cost to attend is $50 and tickets can be purchased at heart.org/semi.
“The event is designed to explore ideas that relate back to the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association,” said Mindy Lopus, corporate events director for the southeast Michigan American Heart Association. “Our goal is to offer talks that are idea-focused, cover a wide range of subjects and provoke further conversation,” said Lopus.
The program, emceed by WXYZ’s Erin Nicole, kicks off at 6:30 pm with speaker presentations followed by a networking reception. Participants representing various industries such as automotive, health care and advocacy will explore topics ranging from healthy food access to the expansion of driveless cars.
According to Kirk Mayes, CEO of Forgotten Harvest, their agency has been in the business of supplying healthy food to those in need since its inception 25 years ago.
“Last year, Forgotten Harvest provided access to over 16 million pounds of fresh produce and fruit to over 280 agencies across metro Detroit who distributed that food to those in need that either had no access or could not afford these vital foods that are critical to their health and well-being,” said Mayes.
“Food can unite and divide,” said Michelle Lutz, farm manager for Recovery Parks Farm and Detroit Public Schools. “It’s one of the few things that is essential to life. Local food systems provide a significant opportunity to use food and urban agriculture as a way to clean up blighted neighborhoods, provide jobs, create safer neighborhoods, educate, and feed our community,” said Lutz.
