Amazon to Host Screening of Lil Baby Documentary “Untrapped” for Detroit Youth

Amazon Community Engagement and Prime Video will host an advanced screening of superstar rapper Lil Baby’s documentary, “Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby”, at Emagine Royal Oak on Wednesday, August 24. The Amazon-sponsored screening will host Detroit area high school students from several youth and leadership groups. The screening will also host a panel featuring prominent area leaders who will speak of their experiences in systemic oppression that keeps so many people of color from being successful in America.

“Lil Baby (Dominique Armani Jones) biographical documentary is a story we feel is influential to the youths of our community,” said Horatio Williams, founder of the Horatio Williams Foundation. “We chose this opportunity to combine the story of Lil Baby with a panel of men from our own community that have also survived being the product of an urban city environment.”

Dorothy Burston, founder of Tuff Cookiez – a nonprofit that helps mentor young women –and Tonesa Welch, founder of Sylent Heart Foundation – a nonprofit that provides support systems to children of incarcerated parents – have collaborated in the past to share compelling stories that enlighten and encourage our youths in the Detroit community. They see this showing as another opportunity to educate Detroit youths in a powerful and relatable way.

“We hope to show local youth how the men representing the panel had lives that mirrored Lil Baby’s due to their consequential actions, but that they were able to defy the odds by changing their mindset and becoming productive in both their lifestyles and newfound beliefs.”

“By having this panel and documentary parallel together, we hope to encourage, uplift and motivate the young men attending this documentary screening,” said Ian Conyers, Amazon’s Head of Community Engagement for Detroit. “They will not only be filled with hope and aspiration, but will also be able to share the experience among their own peers.”

“This journey reflected shows to young men from Detroit to Atlanta and urban communites across the country that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We applaud Amazon’s commitment to telling the stories of young black youth” said Wayne County Commissioner Jonathan C. Kinloch who represents Detroit.
