Kathleen Cleaver of the Black Panther Party is featured speaker for Liberation Film Series event
The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History will present a wide range of exciting, insightful, and inspirational programming in celebration of Black History Month. The museum will be open every day of February to accommodate the expected record visitation by school groups and the general public. Unless otherwise noted, all events take place at the museum, located at 315 East Warren Avenue in Midtown Detroit’s Cultural Center, and are free and open to the public. A complete listing of events is attached; of special note are the following:
In the 50th Anniversary year of the establishment of the Black Panther Party (formerly the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense), Kathleen Cleaver, professor at Emory University School of Law and former communications secretary for the organization, will visit Detroit for the first times since 1971. Cleaver is to speak on the topic of “Report for the Black Liberation Struggle” for the Museum’s Liberation Film Series presentation of The Black Panther: Vanguard of the Revolution, the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party. The program will also pay tribute to former Black Panther Party leaders and activists Ahmad A. Rahman and Ron Scott, both who died in 2015.
